How to Properly Install Tile Stickers and Ways to Maintain It

Tile stickers are durable stickers that you can easily paste on top of your existing floors and tiles. They are a cheaper alternative to laying new floor and take only a fraction of the time in installation. Also, you do not need to hire professional help to paste tile stickers as they are a DIY project. Over the last few years tile covers have found favour amongst a lot of home owners due to its practicality and ease of use. They are also the favoured option for renters as it does not require any wholesale changes to the house and you do not end up splurging money.

However, to be able to apply tile stickers properly, you must follow these simple steps.

Make sure the floor is flat

Before installing tile stickers you need to make sure that the base, whether it is the floor or tiles, is laid properly and is not uneven. Also ensure that there are no broken tiles or damages on the floor. It is not possible to install these stickers on broken or uneven floors.

Wash the surface gently

Wash the floor or tiles gently with soap and water to make sure there is no grease and grit left behind before installing these stickers. If there is any grease left it will not allow the adhesive to work and the stickers may fall off easily.

Paint tiles to avoid colour coming through

If the colour of your original floors and tile stickers is such that it will show the colours from underneath, it is advisable to first pain the floor. You should always paint the grout as otherwise it look like a mismatch, as tile covers will have a fresh look while grout may not look as fresh as the tile stickers.

Peel the back and paste the stickers

You can start applying the stickers once the floor has dried out. All you need to do is peel off the back and paste it in a way that it is straight and in line with the grout. If it is not pasted properly or a in a hurry it will not look sleek. Do not unpeel the stickers and apply again and again as the adhesive will lose its sticking power and you may end up wasting the sticker.

Need to pay attention to corners

You will have to pay special attention to the corners as they can be tricky to paste smoothly. You must first gently place the wall tile stickers over the corner and then use a metal ruler to press down and paste the sticker. You can use a knife to cut off any overhanging areas.

You can increase the life of tile stickers by taking good care of them and maintaining them properly is easier as compared to wooden or cement floors. You can take the following measures to keep your tile decals as good as new for a long time.

Always use wax before buffing

If you plan to buff your tile stickers without adding wax, the chances are that you will end up damaging it. So make sure there is enough wax before you start buffing. It is advisable to use as many as four layers of wax if you use high-speed buffers. Multiple layers of wax offer a lot of protection to your decals at the time of buffing.

Do not drag heavy objects over tile stickers

Dragging heavy objects over your tile stickers will lead to scratches and you may have to replace them if they lose their look or lustre. When moving heavy objects like tables or beds, it is best to lift them instead of dragging them all along the ground.

Wipe them regularly

The look of your tile stickers can be maintained for a long time if you clean them regularly. They get spick and span by just cleaning them soft towel and a mild cleaning agent. If you use a cleaning agent that is harsh, it may lead to discolouration of stickers. If by chance you have spilled a more aggressive cleaning agent by mistake make sure you wipe it off immediately.

Remove scuff marks properly

If there are any scuff marks because of shoes or because you dropped something on the floor, you must not delay in cleaning it. Take a scratch-free towel or a cloth and soapy water and clean it as soon as you spot it. If the scuffing does not come off with towel, you can use a scratch-free cleaning pad.

Keep you floor tiles nice and dry

The life of your tile stickers can be enhanced if they are kept nice and dry. Do not use a lot of water in cleaning them. And in areas where there is a lot of water usage, like the kitchen or the bathroom, make sure you wipe the stickers with a soft dry towel soon after usage.
